Silent Study During Finals

The LMC’s in both buildings will be open for silent study next week. Please encourage your students to use our space to get ready for your finals. Just a reminder that we have plenty of comfortable seats and students can borrow Chromebook chargers to plug in while they are here studying.

Interesting Links: Math Edition

TedED has a playlist of animated video lessons called Math in Real Life that has some interesting application of mathematical principles. The EdTechTeam blog has some creative uses for hyperdocs in the math classroom.

Senior Book Program

Every year, the Main LMC offers the parents of senior students to having us purchase one or more books in their child’s honor. Donations by parents go to new nonfiction books for the main LMC. We put a bookplate with the senior’s name in the front of the book. We then send a follow up letter to the families to let them know the title(s) purchased in their son or daughter’s name. As a part of the program, each year we work with the student council to select a quote for brand the campaign. This year’s quote was “A book is a dream you hold in your hands” by Neil Gaiman. This year’s set of books is on display in the Main LMC through next Thursday if you want to come take a look.

NV Poetry Month / Last Chance to Spit Rhymes This Year

We have two more poetry related events going on this last week of our own take on National Poetry Month. Monday (today) is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Grab a poem, read it, share it with your students, especially if you like it. Friday is our Coffeehouse Open Mic. Everyone is encouraged to share their own song or poem or one by someone else. Would that be a cover poem? Event information and signup, and suggested class activities are on our poetry month site.

According to a recent Gallup poll, teachers are the fourth most trusted profession--behind pharmacists, but we are way ahead of members of Congress, so there is that. Students are overconfident, comprehend less on screens vs. paper according to a new meta-analysis. What it doesn't mention is the need to teach students how to read and comprehend in a digital environment, but that is an article for another week.

National Poetry Month: Be a Poet This Month
Last time, we shared some short lesson plans for introducing students to new poems and related topics. This time, here are some low risk, easy to implement poetry writing activities that can be done as a bell ringer or with a few minutes left in class. We encourage everyone to try it.

Tufts University has been maintaining this expert driven subject directory of child development and parenting websites for many years. Each entry gives an annotation and ratings on the quality and other factors about the site.

 Sweet Search for Better Quality Results

Hey, did you know that Google is actually NOT the only search engine? It’s true! There are even a few that have some higher quality results. Sweet Search uses Google to search, but you only get a subset of higher quality results than a typical Google Search. Students still have to be skilled at evaluating their sources, but the sources with Sweet Search tend to be more trustworthy.

Teen Book Finder

The American Library Association puts out a number of book lists and awards every year, including ones that suggest titles for teenagers. They have been doing this for quite a while, so there are so many lists. But of course, there’s an app for that. The Teen Book Finder App and Database allows you to search and browse these lists to help your students find something to read. There is a range of titles, both fiction and nonfiction here. There is a mobile app and a website you can use to search.

National Poetry Month @ Neuqua Valley

OMG! So excited! I’m sure you are too. It is finally National Poetry Month at Neuqua Valley again. Check out our website with all the events Mary Van Milligen and Eric are planning for the month. Also take a look at the Lesson Plans page for some low prep things you can do if you want to celebrate poetry this month. Read a poem, show a short video, or teach a whole lesson. We have also included some links where you can sign up to get a poem each day in your inbox or podcast feed, so we hope you dip your toe in and find some poems you like. Besides, at least one study has found that reading poetry gives you goosebumps. Some suggested writing prompts coming soon

Students will be hitting the books in the LMC next week. Not literally. That would be weird. Both LMC’s will be used as silent study areas all next week so students can study for their finals. Questions? Let us know.

Anderson’s Bookfair Warehouse Sale

Anderson’s Bookfair Company (the school bookfair division of Anderson’s Bookshop) is offering 35% off for school staff Dec. 11th - 13th. Please note that this is taking place at the bookfair warehouse, not their store. The sale always has a ton of great books for kids K-12, as well as some interesting titles for adults. The warehouse is located at 520 North Exchange Ct., Aurora, IL. It is easiest to enter in the back door of the building.  The warehouse is open until 8 pm today and tomorrow, and then until 5pm on Thursday. You might bring your school ID, but it is usually not necessary.

But in truth, she's a nerdy flat-chested nobody who lives with her Gujarati immigrant parents on the remote Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. Rani struggles against the culture of her Indian born mother and father and with the deeply hidden family secrets as well. But rap opens up her world, and it turns out she's a survivor. Readers experience trauma alongside Rani, but also learn how to recognize patterns of self-harm, stop the cycle of abuse, and embrace various means of healing.
